The Maritime Museum of San Diego invites art and history enthusiasts to explore “Celebrating the Sea,” a captivating new exhibit showcasing a trove of rarely-seen maritime-themed art and artifacts. Nestled within the Compass Gallery aboard the historic ferryboat Berkeley, this exhibit offers visitors an exclusive glimpse into the museum’s lesser-known collections, now accessible as part of general admission. Curated by the museum’s own librarian, Dr. Kevin Sheehan, this exhibit unveils the artistic legacy of renowned creators inspired by the allure of the ocean, iconic ships, and coastal landscapes.

According to Dr. Sheehan, only a fraction of museum collections are typically on display, with many pieces stored away due to limited exhibition space. This exhibit challenges that norm by showcasing previously hidden works. Maritime Museum President and CEO Dr. Raymond Ashley adds, “While our ships are our most visible treasures, this exhibit illuminates the smaller, equally important pieces that don’t always fit into themed displays.” “Celebrating the Sea” allows visitors to rediscover the museum through the eyes of artists who have captured the beauty and history of the nautical world.
