Maritime Museum of San Diego President and CEO
Dr. Christina Connett Brophy has built a decades-long career as a museum executive with extensive curatorial experience and demonstrated success in developing significant strategic partnerships, major capital projects, fundraising, innovative programming, and institutional vision. At Mystic Seaport Museum, Dr. Connett Brophy was Senior Vice President for four years and led the exhibitions, scholarship, and collections teams towards ensuring Mystic continues to build its reputation as a world leader in maritime studies and interpretation. As part of this effort, she has led the charge on bringing Mystic into the 21st century as they broadened their narrative from the past into the present and future through maritime innovations in blue technology and economy. Contributor and editor of numerous publications on themes from marine mammal bioacoustics to fine art to maritime history, Dr. Connett Brophy was also Editor in Chief and founder of Mystic Seaport Museum’s new peer reviewed journal, Mainsheet: A Multidisciplinary Journal of Maritime Studies.
Prior to Mystic, Connett Brophy was the Douglas and Cynthia Crocker Endowed Chair for the Chief Curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum (NBWM), where she had been a senior executive for seven years. While there she demonstrated systemic strategic leadership, successful fundraising, increased branding and outreach, partnership development, and path-breaking initiatives that impacted NBWM in moving the organization towards a unified vision, attracted national and international media recognition, increased visitation, and forged greater connectivity with a diverse community, while placing the institution in a stronger and more sustainable financial position. She has curated more than thirty exhibitions, notably A Spectacle in Motion: The Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World; Thou Shalt Knot: Clifford W. Ashley; A Wild Note of Longing: Albert Pinkham Ryder and a Century of American Art; and Alexis Rockman: Oceanus.
Brophy has lectured extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East on maritime history, fine art, and cartography. She holds degrees from Northwestern University (BA), the University of Auckland (MA), and the University of Valencia (PhD).
A lifelong mariner, Dr. Connett Brophy grew up aboard the R/V Geronimo tagging sharks and turtles throughout the Atlantic for the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Archie Carr Foundation, respectively, and now sails her own vessel in New England and beyond. She looks forward to sailing year-round in San Diego with her husband Gary.
