A New Art Exhibit Showcasing the Maritime Museum’s Hidden Treasures

Now Open in the Compass Gallery aboard ferryboat Berkeley
Curated by Museum Librarian Kevin Sheehan, Ph.D.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego invites art and history enthusiasts to explore Celebrating the Sea, a stunning new exhibit featuring rarely-seen maritime-themed art and artifacts. Located in the Compass Gallery aboard the historic ferryboat Berkeley, this exhibit offers an exclusive look at the museum’s hidden artistic treasures, now unveiled for the public. Curated by Museum Librarian Dr. Kevin Sheehan, it highlights the legacy of artists inspired by the ocean, iconic ships, and coastal landscapes.

Dr. Sheehan notes that only a fraction of the museum’s collections are typically on display, with many pieces stored away due to space constraints. This exhibit challenges that limitation, bringing long-hidden works into the spotlight. Maritime Museum President and CEO Dr. Raymond Ashley adds, “While our ships are our most visible treasures, this exhibit reveals the smaller yet equally significant pieces that often go unseen.” Celebrating the Sea invites visitors to experience maritime history through the eyes of artists who have beautifully captured its grandeur and mystery.
