The majority of the collection items were received by the Maritime Museum of San Diego from unknown sources on unknown dates.

Scope and content:
The Historical Newspaper and Poster Collection, dated 1854 through 1986, consists of originals and reproductions of newspapers, periodicals and posters associated with maritime vessel movements, sea going incidents and disasters that took place throughout the world, plus numerous articles that describe major events in history.
