MARITIME MUSEUM OF SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES LABOR DAY WEEKEND 2019 FAMILY OVERNIGHT ABOARD
STAR OF INDIA
Reservations open for 2nd date due to popular demand.
San Diego, CA (July 8, 2019) — Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world’s largest collections of historic vessels from sail to steam to submarine, will host a second Family Overnight Labor Day weekend, Saturday, August 31, 230 p.m. to Sunday, September 1, 9:00 a.m. aboard the 1863 barque Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship in the world. Guests will embark on an imaginary voyage to relive the lives and times of the emigrant passengers in The Great Age of Sail. Together, participating children and their parents discover and share the same fascination and passion for learning about the history of the sea.
Normally provided as the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Living History program, primarily serving elementary school classes, this is a rare opportunity for families wanting to participate in this exciting experience. According to Jacob Keeton, Director of Education for the Maritime Museum, “The Family Overnight program held this June was a big success. We had our largest turnout in 5 years. Community members and guests are asking for another opportunity to experience the Maritime Museum’s immersive unforgettable life-changing experience aboard Star of India and we are meeting that desire by offering a second Overnight program during Labor Day weekend.”
Instructors will be in character and in costume, teaching various activities such as moving cargo and raising sails. Accommodations aboard Star of India are 19th-century and likened to a camping trip. Held dockside at the Maritime Museum, guests of the overnight adventure will see areas of the ship normally closed to the public and sleep on her “tween decks” out of the elements. Tickets are $75 per participant age 5 and up and include meals and accommodations. Space is limited. Adults must accompany youth under 18. For reservations and more information guests can use the contact form, or call the Museum’s Education Department at 619.234.9153 ext. 138.
