Marine Casualty Incident Procedure

WHENEVER there is an incident involving one of our vessels, whether it be underway or dockside, please call John Merrill and I can let you know whether the Coast Guard must be called and possibly Harbor Police. If you see something, say something. No matter if it’s a major incident or a minor incident, it’s better to be safe than sorry. There are severe financial penalties for incidents not reported immediately to the Coast Guard. If you can’t reach me, call Jim Davis or anyone else who you can contact to report the situation to. If there is any doubt, call. If there is anything out of the norm, it should probably be reported to at least the Harbor Police.

Attached is a flyer describing marine incidents. If you are underway, the number highlighted in yellow is the Coast Guard reporting number. If someone crashes into one of our vessels while it’s sitting dockside, call the Coast Guard in addition to the Harbor Police, as most likely the damage will be enough to make it a reportable incident.

Numbers to call
John Merrill – 619-246-6691
Jim Davis – 619-954-4592

Sail Crew Training Videos

Nothing takes the place of practicing these knots – tying the knot needs to become automatic, ingrained in muscle memory – if you know a knot, you don’t need to think about each step in tying the knot.

These videos are intended as training tools for the crew of the Maritime Museum of San Diego to review basic nautical skills.
