About Donor-Advised Funds

Donor-Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund (or DAF) is a charitable giving account that lets you donate assets to the fund (cash, stocks, etc.) for an immediate tax deduction, then recommend grants to the Museum over time as the assets potentially grow tax-free—offering a simple, tax-efficient way to manage long-term philanthropy.

Benefits of using a donor-advised fund

  • Establish a flexible vehicle for annual charitable giving.
  • Benefit from a more tax- and cost-efficient alternative to a private foundation.
  • Obtain a charitable income tax deduction in the year of your gift.
  • Your charitable assets are invested, creating the potential for you to give more over time.

How a donor-advised fund works

  1. You make an initial, irrevocable gift of cash or stock to fund a DAF at a sponsoring organization, such as the San Diego Foundation or your financial institution.
  2. The assets in your DAF grow tax-free.
  3. You make annual recommendations on gifts to be made from your DAF.

The Maritime Museum Association of San Diego is an exempt organization as described in sections 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, Federal ID# 95-2130325.
