Schooner Scrimshaw Added To Maritime Museum Of San Diego Fleet

Published Date: 04 Apr 2025

Maritime Museum of San Diego, the 501c3 non-profit waterfront Museum with a mission to serve as the community memory of our seafaring experience by collecting, preserving, and presenting our rich maritime heritage and historic connections with the Pacific world, is proud to announce the latest addition of the Block Island schooner Scrimshaw to the Museum’s waterfront fleet representing 500 years of seafaring history. Scrimshaw was born from the noble legacy of the rugged, sea-kindly Block Island Boat of the 1840's. The thirty-six foot Block Island Boat's seaworthiness, great handling qualities and the simplicity of the free-standing rig, make the wide beamed double-ender Scrimshaw a natural for short-handed sailing.

Scrimshaw coming in hot, with a great breeze, filling the sails!

Scrimshaw was built in 1947 and launched in 1960. Prior to being donated to Maritime Museum of San Diego she was an active vessel in the Ancient Mariner’s Sailing Society, a regional organization created to preserve and promote interest in vessels of ancient and/or classic design. The AMSS fleet comprises a “Living Museum” of boats in service which are well loved and cared for, and which are shown and raced together on a regular basis.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is in development of new public and educational on-the-water sailing adventure products surrounding the schooner Scrimshaw, with details soon to be announced. Presently the Museum offers authentic sailing adventure experience opportunities including the 4-hour Tall Ship Adventure aboard the gaff-rigged schooner Californian, a replica of the 1874 Revenue Cutter, and honored as the official tall ship of the state, and the 16th-century galleon San Salvador, a replica of the first European vessel to reach the West Coast of the United States. Each experience includes general admission to tour the Maritime Museum of San Diego fleet and all below-deck exhibits. More details can be found at On The Water Adventures

Maritime Museum of San Diego sail crew volunteers will debut the schooner Scrimshaw as a competitor in the 37th America’s Schooner Cup hosted by the Silver Gate Yacht Club to benefit the Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society. The race starts in San Diego Bay off Shelter Island in front of Silver Gate Yacht Club at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025. Details at Americas Schooner Cup
