Scrimshaw was built in 1947 and launched in 1960. Prior to being donated to the Maritime Museum of San Diego, she was an active vessel in the Ancient Mariner’s Sailing Society, a regional organization dedicated to preserving and promoting interest in vessels of classic and historic design. The AMSS fleet comprises a “Living Museum” of well-maintained vessels that continue to celebrate traditional craftsmanship and seamanship.
Today, Scrimshaw is preserved as part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s historic fleet, where she supports select educational programs and special sailing events while helping preserve the traditions of wooden boatbuilding and traditional sailing for future generations.
