Maritime Museum Of San Diego Introduces New Youth Adventure Camp Out
New 24-hour immersive sailing sleepover experience registration open
Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world’s largest collections of historic vessels from sail to steam to submarine, is introducing a new exciting tall ship sailing and dockside overnight experience for youth age 10-17 and adults this winter. The Youth Adventure Camp Out will be offered over Saturday, November 23 to Sunday, November 24. Guests will board at the Maritime Museum of San Diego Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. and depart the overnight experience Sundays at 8:30 a.m.
According to Jacob Keeton, Director of Education for the Maritime Museum, “The new Youth Adventure Camp Out combines the excitement of a San Diego Bay tall ship sailing adventure aboard the schooner Californian with the unforgettable dockside camping thrill on Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship. Our award-winning Living History staff was inspired by the turnout for the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s new summertime Oceanography Merit Badge Days event designed for youth and scouts and wanted to offer more experiences for youth and family members.”
Saturday guests will sail, row, climb the rigging, and join the Californian sail crew in hauling lines, and work with the crew to set and furl the sails. Crew will share the history of sailing and exploration in San Diego, share tales of whaling and sea otter trade, local sea battles, the art of the ship’s gunnery, life at sea and observe skilled gunners in action with the firing of four six-pound deck guns.
After the sail, participants will return to the Maritime Museum docks to unwind with a traditional sailor knot craft and dinner aboard Star of India. Guest will get a guided behind the scenes tour and see how emigrant passengers lived on board during The Great Age of Sail. After dinner guests will join us below for movie time with a light dessert. At night guests will sleep on her tween decks and take part in a Watch Station.
Maritime Museum of San Diego has hosted for more than 20 years highly popular year-round educational events for hundreds of educators looking for exceptional, educational and experiential programming for youth programs and students.
