Racing aboard Californian, race viewing aboard San Salvador
The most beautiful ships from our past will be showing off in San Diego Bay for the 29th running of America’s Schooner Cup on Saturday, April 1. Hailing from southern California and the Pacific Northwest, eight to ten schooners are expected to take the starting gun.
The race is hosted by Silver Gate Yacht Club with all proceeds going to the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society – a non-profit whose mission is to help Navy and Marine families. The event will be sponsored by Star Clippers, a worldwide cruise ship company featuring tall ships. The schooners range in length from 35 to 150 feet. For those who want to be part of the action, these Maritime Museum of San Diego vessels will be taking guests:
- Californian, California’s official state Tall Ship, and she will be in the race.
- San Salvador, a replica of Juan Cabrillo’s ship which first visited San Diego in 1542, the ultimate viewing platform for this years schooner cup.
If you are a Schoonerman come join the fun.
