Moby Dick Marathon Reading aboard the Star of India

Join us on August 1st to celebrate the birthday of Herman Melville and the collective power of the spoken word as this American classic is read aloud from the decks of the 1863 Barque Star of India.

This community reading is open to the public with paid Museum admission starting at Noon Saturday and concluding early afternoon on Sunday, August 2nd.

Sign-ups for the public to read will take place at the ships gangway. Everyone is welcome to participate. Celebrity readers will be scheduled intermittently.

Can I participate in the reading?

Of course! Everyone is encouraged…whether by reading, listening, or both

Can I choose a specific part of the book to read?

We are unable to accommodate reservations or requests for particular times or passages, with some exceptions. You are welcome to come down to the Star of India to find out where we are in the book. We will have a sign-up for next available openings.

When can I sign up?

Sign-ups will begin at 11:00 am at the gangway of the Star of India.

How long will each person read?

We will allocate 5-minute slots for reading.  If there is no one in queue, you are welcome to continue on an incremental basis.

Will food or drink be available aboard the ship?

Drinks and light snacks will be available for purchase.

Can I just show up at the Star of India in the middle of the night?

You can. From 9:00 pm Saturday – 9:00 am Sunday, only the upper decks of the Star of India will be open, however your paid Museum Admission will still be honored for the Museum’s other ships during Museum hours throughout the reading (9:00 am Saturday – 9:00 pm Sunday).

Has this been done before?

Public readings have always been a shared community event in varying forms. As for Moby Dick, institutions throughout the country have hosted events, including the Museum of America and the Sea in Mystic Seaport CT and the New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, MA.

Will there be any break in the reading?

We will schedule a 10-minute break every 3 hours.

In what format will the reading be made available?

We will have several English print versions available but we encourage participants to bring a copy. We welcome readings in other languages.
