Dhow Boats

In Search of Sinbad, East African Dhow Boats, Kusi un Kaskazi (African)

An extraordinary exhibit of 28 black and white photographs by Beat Presser

The exhibit ends Oct 5, 2015 on the main deck of the Berkeley.

Waves, fishermen and boat builders–Swiss photographer Beat Presser spent three months traveling the coast of Tanzania equipped with a Leica M 6, researching the culture of dhow sailing ships. The result of his journey is a gentle homage to a part of Africa steeped in tradition.

The message of this collection of beautiful and expressive photographs Beat Presser has taken of and on dhows while sailing down the Swahili coast of East Africa is that “the sea is not the end of the world. It is the beginning of a whole new world of subsistence, resources, and opportunities.”
