CLIPPER STAD AMSTERDAM SAILING TO WEST COAST
Netherlands Historic Flagship Visits Sister Ship Star of India at Maritime Museum of San Diego
San Diego, CA (February 7, 2018) — Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world’s finest collections of historic vessels, from sail to steam to submarine, announces the arrival of the Clipper Stad Amsterdam to San Diego Thursday morning, February 8, 2018. Stad Amsterdam is owned by the city of Amsterdam and the Randstad Group, a large Dutch company. Stad Amsterdam is a three-masted clipper that was built in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2000 at the Damen Shipyard. She is 250 feet overall and carries 31 sails. She has an authentic square rig, a pointed bow and is registered under the Dutch flag as a passenger ship. Stad Amsterdam will be docked along the north embarcadero next to Maritime Museum of San Diego through February 17.
Dr. Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., President/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego states “Stad Amsterdam has a great likeness to Star of India, 212 feet overall, the world’s oldest active sailing vessel and one of Maritime Museum of San Diego’s historic fleet. To witness the two vessels side by side on San Diego’s waterfront will be quite a treat.” Launched as Euterpe in 1863, the iron-hulled Star of India made San Diego her home port in 1927 and has since then been on display along the San Diego Bay front with a host of other Maritime Museum vessels including tall ships HMS Surprise, Californian, San Salvador, steam ferry Berkeley and Medea, USS Dolphin and Foxtrot Soviet submarine, and engine-powered historic boats such as the 1914 Pilot and Vietnam war era Swift PCF 816.
