San Diego Public Library’s Winter Ready Challenge: Litera-SEA

Maritime Museum Of San Diego And City Of San Diego Public Library Partner On Litera-SEA, A New 2020 Winter Reading Program

SAN DIEGO, CA – Maritime Museum of San Diego, serving as the community memory of our seafaring experience by collecting, preserving, and presenting our rich maritime heritage and historic connections with the Pacific world, announces sponsorship of the San Diego Public Library’s Winter Reading Challenge: Litera-SEA. Libraries system-wide in 36 communities throughout the San Diego region will participate.

This is the first year for the Winter Reading Challenge at the San Diego Public Library. Building on the success of the Library’s Summer Reading Program, it encourages San Diegans of all ages to pick up a book and improve their reading skills during the month of January. According to the 2018 Smarter Balanced Assessments, about half of all San Diego Unified third-graders did not meet English Language Arts/Literacy standards and the numbers are lower for many students in disadvantaged areas.

“The Winter Reading Challenge is a great way to get families reading together and improve literacy skills for young people,” said Library Youth and Engagement Coordinator Emily Derry. “We know that children and teens who see the adults in their lives reading are more likely to become lifelong readers themselves.”

The Litera-SEA Winter Reading Challenge begins Jan. 1st and runs through Jan. 31st. Participants who read five books or five hours will receive prizes donated by Maritime Museum of San Diego and local Subway® Restaurants. Prizes include a pass for free admission plus a guest at the museum, as well as a free 6” sub for teens and adults and a free kid’s meal for children at Subway® Restaurants. To register, Click Here or stop by any of the 36 City of San Diego Library locations.
