Anticipation and Dedication.

That is what makes a Maritime Museum of San Diego a Sail Crew volunteer.
Beginning of every year the Maritime Museum begins Sail Training 101. Those enrolled will take classes in sailing the barque Star of India, the HMS Surprise, Steamship Medea, and the official tall ship of our state “Californian”.
Students attend class each Sunday until mid-April to learn to maintain and sail the museum ships. “Crew Qualification Days” are the final exam of their effort. New and returning crew show their mettle and go through exams including a written test on history, procedures, and basic ships knowledge of sea craft plus knots and physical testing. Those that are willing and pass the required tests can then try out for a climbing position. We have deck, jibboom, course, and top qualified sail crew positions.
While sail training 101 is once a year you can still get involved and qualify. Our crew are always ready to teach and share. Testing is done quarterly and most information is available on our website to study (more about Sail/Maintenance Crew). Mentors are ready and willing to grow a new crew member.
Here you see photos of our dedicated crew and new hopefuls during Spring 2015. We hope to see you next crew day.
